Our 2025 Pita Pinta Asturiana breeding rooster (darker orange hue) over a black Silverudd’s Blue hen with silver birchen markings produced a few roosters that we are perhaps most excited about for 2026. Their coloring ranges from deep golden to almost completely silver, always with a black tail, and feathers incompletely penciled, appearing almost black-laced-white or the inverse of a Silver Laced Wyandotte. The closest example of this color in an established breed that we can find is the extraordinarily rare Silver Pencilled Hamburg. We suspect that in a “complete” version of this color, the hen would in fact be transverse pencilled.

All about the view – our Sunset Highway Breeding Pen for 2026 will include hens with birchen, lacing, pencilling, or mottling/millefleur genetics. While chicks from this pen could still be solid colored, most chicks will inherit at least some sort of pattern. Our hens in this pen have Pita Pinta Asturiana, Bielefelder, French Black Copper Marans, Swedish Flower Hen, Silverudd’s Blue, and/or Welsummer genetics – most are heavily mixed. We are calling this a “breeding pen” at present, but we expect this pen to spawn a fully formed project in 2027.

We suspect our rooster carries a very strong single Silver gene, a single pattern gene (Pg), and a single DarkBrown gene (Db).

Chicks from this pen won’t just have the chance of unusual feather patterns, egg colors of 2026 chicks abound in possibility, but mid-tone toasted cream/pink is most likely. Our rooster does not carry a blue egg gene, but about half of the hens in the group do, so about 25% of chicks will inherit a blue egg gene to produce a teal/moss green egg.
