Rising Mist

Breeding Project

One of our favorite hens is a cross between a Swedish Flower Hen rooster over a Silverudd’s Blue hen (from Greenfire Farms, who just happened to have a pea comb). She was used in the foundation “Lichen Line” of our Elk Creek Rock Breeding Project, and we believe we are seeing some “true blue” homozygous blue eggs from her 2025 offspring. These beautiful blue eggs combined with a desire to retain a diverse, mottled flock, has led us to continue working with the Swedish Flower Hen x Silverudd’s Blue genetic mix.

In 2026, we have selected a dilute splash Silverudd’s Blue x Swedish Flower Hen rooster, who is heterozygous for the blue egg gene (has just one gene), several of his sisters, and a group of purebred Swedish Flower Hen hens. Interestingly when using the Swedish Flower Hen as the mother, the chicks still seem to have inherited the Silverudd’s Blue’s size. The Silverudd’s Blue genetics in this group are from a small scale breeder who claims first import stock. We have two lines under Rising Mist in 2026: the Blue Line is blue egg gene oriented, and the Swedish Line is mottling oriented.

2026 Rising Mist – Blue Line

Breeding hens in this line are siblings to the breeding rooster and chicks will be F1 mixes of Silverudd’s Blue x Swedish Flower Hen.

Chicks from this line will have a 75% chance of having at least one blue egg gene (25% chance of having two blue egg genes), and a 25% chance of laying a beige/off-white egg. For chicks with one or more blue egg genes, the color may be pale blue to blue or blue-green.

Chicks will have a 25% chance of presenting with mottled feathers (mottling is a recessive gene and requires two genes to appear), however, chicks will most likely be splash based, which will make the mottling hard to see.

2026 Rising Mist – Swedish Line

Breeding hens in this line are purebred Swedish Flower Hens and are back cross mixes of Silverudd’s Blue x Swedish Flower Hen over Swedish Flower Hens. We have blue, red, wheat, and black based hens in this line.

Chicks from this line will have a 50% chance of presenting with mottled feathers (mottling is a recessive gene and requires two genes to appear). In chicks that inherit a blue dilute gene from their mother and are splash, the mottling may be hard to see.

Chicks from this line will also have a 50% chance of inheriting one blue egg gene. Expected egg colors are pale blue to pale blue-green or off-white to beige.

Breeding Project History – 2025:

Photos below of our Rising Mist hen after her first hard adult molt (gray lacing around her neck has become more prominent, and she is much fuller bodied). We are continuing to use her in our Elk Creek Rock Breeding Project – Main Line.

Our Rising Mist hen is the result of a Swedish Flower Hen Rooster over a Silverudd’s Blue blue hen. Since mottling (the flower pattern) is recessive we weren’t terribly surprised when the little splash looking chick feathered out to white, but then she developed faint gray lacing about her neck and a hint of a diluted splash pattern. Then she laid an egg at 20 weeks on the dot and has continued laying almost daily – even in December.

Since we have a couple extra Silverudd’s Blue hens with our breeding Swedish Flower Hen rooster, we are pleased to offer this cross in 2025. All parents are sourced from Greenfire Farms, and the parent hens are black with gold lacing around the neck or splash. Pictured is the Rising Mist hen and her eggs. Egg color is expected to be pale green with occasional white or brown speckling. Feather pattern and color may differ since we are using different colored hens this year, but the birchen pattern has shown up in all of our Swedish Flower Hen crosses so far. Please note that her light green eggs have started out quite small, which we see regularly with Swedish Flower Hens and Silverudd’s Blue from Greenfire, but have steadily increased since she started laying.
